Project

Greenled-LEDiL-reference When Pori council selected leading Finnish lighting solution provider Greenled Oy to replace ageing mercury vapour lighting on one of its forest fitness tracks, it was the perfect opportunity to introduce a modern LED lighting solution. Something that not only provided ideal lighting for track users throughout the year, but also integrated more sustainably with the natural surroundings.

Solution

As the area is located in a national park, it was crucial to balance biodiversity preservation with the needs of park visitors. The council prioritized circular economy principles, choosing Greenled’s Vega S fixture, crafted from 100% recycled aluminum, and paired with LEDiL’s AMBER lens. These optics integrate seamlessly with the landscape, allow wider pole spacing without compromising uniformity, and serve both path and area lighting with simple optic changes, streamlining maintenance and reducing costs. To minimise disruption, the amber coloured lenses almost completely eliminate blue light from the white light LEDs, reducing light pollution and ensuring nocturnal wildlife remains undisturbed. This approach supports biodiversity while meeting the park’s illumination needs.

Benefits

This project has helped increase awareness in the outdoor lighting market about the harmful effects of blue light. While lowering the colour temperature to 3000K alone is not enough to eliminate the harmful effect of blue light, using LEDiL’s new AMBER lens filters out blue light wavelengths much more effectively — blocking ~99 % of the blue light of the LED — than simply switching to a 3000K colour temperature. The lights feature 4000K LEDs, but with the AMBER lens, the resulting colour temperature is around 2500K, making the light slightly warmer than 3000K. The overall solution means Pori council have been able to implement lighting that concretely supports their forest program. The lighting serves multiple purposes—not only illuminating paths but also taking into account the surrounding nature and those who enjoy it.
