LEDiL's FLORENCE lens helps modernise Finlandia Hall's Lighting

Project
Finlandia Hall, designed by renowned architect Alvar Aalto, is a landmark in Helsinki, Finland. While the original light fixtures, also designed by Aalto, were iconic, they required modernisation to meet contemporary lighting standards and improve the building’s functionality for modern events. TUNTO Lighting took on the challenge of upgrading these fixtures with RGBW technology while preserving their historical aesthetics.
The primary goal was to upgrade the lighting system to RGBW technology, enabling dynamic colour changes and enhanced lighting control without compromising the integrity of the original design. Achieving high light intensity and maintaining the quality of white light were critical requirements.
Solution
TUNTO Lighting creatively utilised LEDiL’s FLORENCE lens, employing it in an innovative way with RGB and white LEDs. Its design, to focus light into beams, was critical for creating vivid colours with RGB LEDs. The RGB LEDs were installed directly beneath the designated area of the Florence lens. This setup allowed the lens to focus RGB light into beams, enhancing colour dynamics and visual impact.
Benefits
The modernisation enabled dynamic colour changes and improved lighting control, increasing Finlandia Hall’s versatility for different events. The innovative use of the Florence lens ensured the new system preserved the visual and historical integrity of Alvar Aalto’s original design. The new LED lighting system is also more energy-efficient and durable than the original incandescent lamps, supporting Finlandia Hall’s sustainability objectives.
